This Weekend’s On Patrol: Live Highlights, Quotes, Social Media Activity, and Puns
The docuseries On Patrol: Live — i.e., Live PD 2.0 — premiered on the Reelz channel on July 22, 2022 and generally follows the same basic format as its A&E network predecessor in which videographers accompany cops on night patrol in real time.
About 50 On Patrol: Live cameras go into the field with the law enforcement officers usually from eight different U.S. departments during the ride-along on Friday and Saturday evenings. Pre-recorded segments are typically part of the show content as well.
An On Patrol: Live recap, including studio host Dan Abrams’ puns, analysis, and banter with co-anchors Sean Larkin and Curtis Wilson (retired Tulsa, Okla., cop and Richland County, S.C., deputy sheriff, respectively), along with the often-snarky or playful social media reaction, follows.
“Sticks” Larkin is gradually phasing out of the show. Sgt. Mike Bryant of the Daytona Beach, Fla, PD is in Larkin’s chair or former chair this weekend.
The Peacock and FreeCast streaming services carry the Reelz Channel, which is the home of OPL.

On Patrol: Live Summary for August 11, 2023 (#OPL Episode 02-07)
- Volusia County, Fla. — Dep. Royce James responds to a neighbor dispute and admonishes a man for calling police because another man is walking a puppy unleashed.
- Berkeley County, S.C. — Dep. Dylan Lee uses a translate app to obtain information from a complainant about someone allegedly selling drugs at a hotel.
- Volusia County, Fla. — Dep. Kletus Stubblefield and other units make a traffic stop for no lights. Another officer administers field sobriety testing on the driver, who is subsequently arrested.
- Richland County, S.C. — Traffic stop. Gun allegedly in car. The driver is subsequently released with no charges after deputies determine he is a legal gun owner.
- Daytona Beach, Fla. (pre-recorded segment) — Lt. Richie Maher and other units attempt traffic stop for expired tag on slow roller. Driver pulled over at gunpoint. Car towed. Maher: “It’s got a fraudulent sticker on it that belongs on another vehicle that belongs to another individual in another city. So the the sticker is probably stolen off of another car. The tag that is on it expired two years ago. He was obviously trying to evade us. He’s gonna be going to jail tonight…for fleeing and eluding. It wasn’t at a high rate of speed. He just didn’t want to stop probably because his sticker’s been expired since 2021. They’re gonna call out to the owner of the sticker and see if it’s been reported stolen or if he just now notices it’s stolen. So there could be an investigation there.”
Sgt. Bryant on a what’s going through an cop’s mind even during a short, slow-speed pursuit. “It’s the fear of the unknown. It’s officer safety. You don’t know if they’re trying to discard evidence, hide contraband or a firearm. And sometimes they’re trying to get to their house so they park their car, thinking we won’t tow it…so officers are thinking a lot of things, and that fear is what causes us to do a felony stop…” Wilson: “He didn’t even help his case with the attitude that he had, all well as just talking all this noise, and even hollering out to citizens to try to get them to see what’s going on. The thing is, it’s like shows like this, this video shows the beginning, middle, and the end of everything that took place which helps us…” Abrams: Bodycams also…there there to protect the citizens, but they also there protect the cops too.”
- Nye County, Nev. — Dep. Nicholas Huggins interacts with RV driver pulling an overloaded trailer that apparently was trespassed off a property. Trailer has flat tire. Huggins: “We’re not really trying to hassle you, man. We just got to do what we got to do. But I’m sure you know you can’t be dragging that down the road like that.”
- Toledo, Ohio — Sgt. Geoff McLendon and Ofr. Greg Long Jr. respond to a domestic issue. McLendon recommends that the parties to got to court to obtain a order of protection against an ex who is allegedly harassing them.
- Berkeley County, S.C. — Sgt. Paul Yacobozzi and many other first responders assist at the scene of a 28-vehicle accident involving at least six different collisions. No serious injuries, however. About 20 wreckers en route. Yacobozzi: “Right now, we also have a school bus coming to pick everybody up off the Interstate. We had a real bad rain storm which cut visibility down to zero…we had one car that lost control…everybody behind that one first collision had stopped, and we had a secondary collision, and then we had a third collision, and then we had this large pileup. We actually had some vehicles that are sandwiched in between that are not involved surprisingly…”
- Richland County, S.C. — Cops including Master Dep. Shannon Tolman and Sgt. Garo Brown pursue a fleeing motorcycle that wrecks out and driver bails. Foot pursuit in wooded area with the help of a K9 and drone. Deputies find and detain the driver. Wilson on the communication among the officers: “So important. Now they’re gonna figure out all the charges that this guy has. But when you have the K9, you got a drone, and you set a perimeter with officers — those two, the K9 and the drone, we’re gonna find you.” Bryant: It’s hard to get away…sometimes there’s over communication…they did a great job taking him into custody…” Abrams: “You need the key people talking, and everyone else shutting up.” Wilson: “It’s so frustrating when you try to key the mic, and you can’t get in, and you have something important…Abrams: “Well, we’ve heard this before. We’ve heard people say ‘get off this channel,’ right?”
Sgt. Brown: “The guy ran on us, Obviously, it’s a super dangerous situation. He actually missed the turn and…he came all the way, hit the ramp, and ended up down here. And with all these trees, and all who knows what else, he really could have got himself killed. The VIN is scratched off, so most likely, it’s probably gonna be stolen….The temporary tag on there was probably no good. So he’s been apprehended. They’ve got to get him out of the woods because he actually made it pretty far down into the woods…”
- Toledo, Ohio — Cops respond to shots-fired call.
- Hazen, Ark. — Traffic stop for alleged erratic driving. Driver allegedly has no license, no insurance, and car has expired tags. Chief Bradley Taylor to driver: “You pulled right up next to me and then slammed on your brakes and got over on the shoulder. And then you started creeping behind me.” Driver records zero on a breathalyzer. Car towed. Citations issued.
OPL Triple Play #3 — Kenosha County, Wisc.
- Nye County, Nev. — Dep. Huggins makes contact with a pedestrian after a report from a passerby of alleged indecent exposure on the highway. Huggins: “We’re gonna go see if this is occurring. Based on what it sounds like here, it may or may not be criminal in nature…”
- Toledo, Ohio — Sgt. McLendon and Ofr. Long, respond to a report of a dispute over a pizza order and try to mediate the situation at the restaurant. Abrams: “Well, that is a total waste of police officers’ time, and we see it all the time…particularly, weirdly at fast-good joints…” McLendon: “She already ate half of the pizza, so you can’t really expect a refund. But she wants a refund…she’ll gonna be on her way. Hopefully, she won’t come back…”
- Daytona Beach, Fla. — Viewer Q&A for Sgt. Bryant.
- Daytona Beach, Fla. — Officers pursue a vehicle that allegedly fled from a VCAT unit. Heavy bleeping as driver, who repeatedly expresses a provocative mantra, is taken into custody after a felony stop. Det. Selina Puentes: “This nice gentleman, he was the only occupant in the car, crashed right into this — trying to avoid the sticks. Looks like there’s three cars involved…he’s gonna go to jail for resisting, fleeing, and eluding. And we’re gonna search the car in a minute…”
Sgt. Bryant comments on de-escalation techniques: “We train on that all the time. “{The lieutenant ] didn’t even want officers in the guy’s periphery. Get him completely out of the scene to calm the situation down. That’s what we want: calmness. And everybody goes home happy, except that he goes to jail.” Wilson: “It’s one of those things where we train verbal judo…”
- Volusia County, Fla. — Traffic stop on two cars. Abrams: “Sounds like if it all checks out, they’ll be going home.”
- Berkeley County, S.C. — Traffic stop for tag issue and littering.
- OPL Triple Play #2 — Hope, Ark.
- Wilkes-Barre, Pa. — Traffic stop for apparently nonfunctioning brake light. Car has an expired inspection ticker and potentially violates the window-tint regulation. For some reason, the quarrelsome driver, for one thing, doesn’t seem to like Ofr. Bill Wilk speaking to him from the passenger side. Citations issued which will be mailed to the driver. Abrams: “What was interesting there, as we were watching Officer Wilk, is that he didn’t get irritated at any point in the interaction.”
- Richland County, S.C. — Sgt. Brown responds to someone in a parked car who might be passed out. Driver is, however, just watching a TV show. Abrams: “Well. If he’s watching Forensic Files, now he’s getting the full experience, right? He’s watching it, and then the police are there as well.”
- Berkeley County, S.C. — Alleged DUI arrest after a traffic stop in the area with a heavy police presence owing to that multi-car accident. Abrams: “You hear Sgt. Yacobozzi asking him, ‘you didn’t see any of this?’ And the answer may be because he’s impaired.”
- BOLO segment — San Diego, Calif.
- Volusia County, S.C. — Dep. James makes contact with Vinny, who is “trespassing the Earth.” James: “This is Vinny. He is our town drunk. And on a daily basis, we find him laying around on sidewalks and gas stations. He’s kind of just a pain sometimes. He really never gives us trouble, but he’s the town drunk…he’s been trespassed from every single business in this entire zip code. We’re gonna cut Vinny a break today. Of course, we’ve easily arrested Vinny 20 times. He’s kind of harmless. We’re gonna give him a break today, and let him go home and sober up.”
Abrams: “I assume…that everyone has their town drunk trespasser that they deal with on a regular basis.” Bryant: “Everyone has their ‘my cousin Vinny.'”
- Toledo, Ohio — Officers temporarily detain a woman after responding to a domestic call. Abrams: “A reminder: The police got called there to the scene. They didn’t just show up there. There was a report of an incident; they’re investigating.”
- Missing segment — Chicago, Ill.
Berkeley County, S.C. (pre-recorded segment) — Abrams quips that the subject “turned out to be something of a ‘cranky pants.'” Subject has a warrant; drugs found in search.
- Daytona Beach, Fla. — Sgt. Bryant Q&A round two.
- Berkeley County, S.C. — Sgt. Yacobozzi makes a traffic stop on a vehicle for lane violation that may or may not be a moped.
