On Patrol: Live Summary for December 14, 2024 (#OPL Episode 03-42)
- Richland County, S.C. — Dep. Toddson Catoe and other units make a traffic stop. The motorist appears reluctant to step out of the vehicle. The situation goes from 0 to 60, and deputies have to subdue him. It turns out the driver, who seems very emotional and even apologetic afterwards, has a warrant for an alleged kidnapping in Virginia. Deputies allegedly find drugs and a gun. On scene, Dep. Catoe explains that paramedics will clear the subject before he is transported to jail and that the alleged charges may include possession of a stolen firearm, drug possession, and resisting arrest. OPL host Dan Abrams: “So it seems it’s suspected cocaine, not meth, in addition to a stolen weapon, in addition to the outstanding warrant on a very serious crime.” In a disturbing update later in the OPL episode, Dep. Catoe reveals that the jail discovered that the subject allegedly had 14 bags of cocaine in his derriere.
Have you ever seen someone who is OCD get pulled over? Richland County just did I think. #OpLive

- Monroe, La. — Amidst a rain storm, Ofr. Serenity Smith of the High Enforcement Apprehension Team (HEAT) squad conducts a traffic stop for a driver who allegedly ran a red light, was on his phone, and was not wearing a seat belt. When the driver apologizes, Ofr. Smith replies “apologize to your mama, okay, because…your mama don’t want to have you in no hospital for Christmas.” The young man is released with a warning after Ofr. Smith has a brief chat with the dad on the phone.
Listen to a portion of Ofr. Smith’s interaction with the driver and his dad:
Ofr. Smith: “Like I said, these people around here in Louisiana, especially in Monroe, they can’t drive worth for nothing. And I’m just gonna give him a break this time. Let him go home, dad, mom, apologize, because I don’t want no accidents to happen tonight. Definitely don’t want nothing to happen while it’s still raining.” Abrams: “So that guy is just gonna get a warning in some nasty weather there, which makes it that much more important.”
#OPLive oh my lord Officer Smith needs to put out training modules on how to deal with gen z

- Toledo, Ohio (pre-recorded segment) — In introducing the segment, Abrams asserts that “you know the old saying ‘two’s company, three is a crowd.’ Well, recently in Toledo, Ohio, officers there learned that a relationship involving seven people can get really crowded.” Ofrs. Jordan Freimark and Cherokee Tabb respond to a domestic incident in home where allegedly “about seven people live together in a polyamorous relationship.” Ofr. Freimark explains that the incident allegedly started out with a dog attack on one of the residents but after that calmed down, it devolved into a situation where adults allegedly started fighting with each other and one of them was allegedly tossed “like a rag doll.” One arrest made on scene.

- Monroe, La. — Ofrs. Smith and Khadeem Dumas-Brown make a traffic stop on a vehicle that is possibly stuck in the mud. Expired license.
- Daytona Beach, Fla. — Ofr. Magen Geary responds to a noise complaint at a resident and asks the homeowners to tone it somewhat. “Just keep the dance moves and the volume to a minimum.” Reacting to a woman on scene who is an OPL fan, Abrams quips that “we’re glad that you watch all the time now. Just turn the music down.” Ofr. Geary summary: “They’re gonna turn down the music for the remainder of the night. Right now, they’re not in violation of any city ordinances or anything that would request or require law enforcement activity, but neighbors are complaining that’s it a little bit rowdy. So we did our job. We had them turn the music down a little bit. But if…it’s an issue, we’ll come back out and address it.” Abrams jokes that “Rizzo just said turn the music down, turn the show up.”
- St. Lucie County, Fla. — Sheriff Keith Pearson, Dep. Sydney Jenkins, and other LEOs assist Ft. Pierce PD in a tragic situation involving an alleged homicide and a suspect barricaded in the house. Cops converge on the house. OPL studio analyst Tom Rizzo and OPL co-host Curtis Wilson discuss the various tactical strategies in a potential standoff. Two kids who were in the house are safe, and cops detain the suspect peacefully after making contact with him.
Sheriff Pearson summary: “…our deputies helped with taking the individual into custody. Unfortunately, a life was lost tonight. The suspect was taken into custody, and we’ll get to the bottom of everything here shortly though.” Dep. Jenkins adds that “when we arrived here, the suspect was still inside. He fired one round in the back corner of the house. Fort Pierce went in, got the suspect out, and they said that the victim is deceased at this time. And then we’re gonna be clearing out, because Fort Pierce is going to be taking over the call. The kids were given to the siblings that were standing out in the street with a Fort Pierce officer. They’re safe.”
Praying for everyone involved. As a DV survivor, these situations always scare me and make me anxious. Good thing the kids are safe. 🙏💙💔 #OPLive #OPNation #OnPatrolLive pic.twitter.com/FU00yspX3e

Abrams: “So, obviously, from the law enforcement perspective, it’s a huge relief that this guy has come out peacefully on his own volition. But now they also have to do an investigation here. They have to put the pieces together. It seems to be one thing, but they’ve got to be able to put together a possible case here.” Rizzo: “…and…that’s the professional side of the house. We want it to be resolved peacefully. They don’t want another engagement, per se, right? So, he came out, but now we have to peel back the layers, make sure we do a comprehensive investigation, and then simultaneously recruit other resources for the good and the welfare of those children to debrief them.” Abrams: “And the first thing will be them going to family members for now.”`
- Toledo, Ohio — Ofrs. Heather Smith and Tyler Picking conduct a traffic stop on a pickup truck that jumped the curb “and then went through this parking lot off road…and then he’s just acting kind of strange.” Ofr. Picking offers to guide the driver back to the highway and explains that “he’s a little lost right now. He’s from Lima, Ohio. He went to go see the zoo lights. So he’s not really familiar with the area. He’s following his GPS a little too closely. I’m gonna tell him to go turn right. So I’m just cutting him a warning. Gonna get back on the road so he can find it and head back towards home.”
- Berkeley County, S.C. — Cpls. Carli and Devonte Car make contact with a driver at a gas station in what Carli described as “I guess essentially like a welfare check.” Open container of wine allegedly found and poured out. Car search. Abrams update: “That man had a friend pick him up. He was released with no charges.”
- Richland County, S.C. — Sgt. Chris Blanding and a colleague make a traffic stop. Two occupants. Open container poured out. A gun is spotted during a car search, which one of the occupants says is a BB gun. Odor of burnt weed allegedly detected. Abrams update: “The driver…was released — no charges. The passenger… was arrested for possession with intent to distribute.”
- Berkeley County, S.C. — Cpl. Devonte Carr leaves the prior call to pursue some street racers. One of them is pulled over in a traffic stop and receives tickets.
- Toledo, Ohio — Numerous cops respond to a report of 50 guests at an Airbnb and disperse them. OPL caption: “Airbnb now vacant.” Ofr. Smith: “So we’re not actually gonna let the dog out right now. But sometimes the dog being on scene with the large crowd with the barking — it’ll get them to disperse quicker.” Abrams; “You got to feel for whoever’s house that actually is there. Don’t know if they called it in or not.”

- Monroe, La. (pre-recorded segment) — Ofr. Smith conducts a traffic stop for alleged reckless driving or the equivalent. The driver says he consumed one beer. Another officer conducts field sobriety testing on scene. The driver briefly resisted after being arrested. Ofr. Smith: “He is, of course, gonna go to jail for the DWI; he put up a fight. [Another officer] is injured by the mouth. He’s gonna get a charge for each one of the officers that he hurt.” Abrams: “He blew a .224 at the station. That’s getting close to three times the legal limit.”
- Toledo, Ohio — Ofrs. Freimark and Tabb enter an abandoned building through a hole in the wall on a report of possible intruder. Ofr. Tabb: “It’s gross in there.” Ofr. Freimark: “So we made entry to the vacant property. Nobody’s in there. We’re just gonna advise the city to come back and board this store up so that way people can’t keep getting in there at this time. So we’ll advise them, wrap it up here, and be on our way to the next one.”

- Triple Play #3 — A Richland County pursuit.
- Berkeley County, S.C. — Cpl. Devonte Carr and another deputy conduct a traffic stop consensual car search at a gas station that becomes a probable cause car search after a glass pipe is allegedly found. Cpl. Carli Carr comes on scene to search a perhaps nervous female occupant (“just pretend it’s a massage, okay?”). The subjects are released with a warning. Separately, a couple who are OPL fans greet the Carrs at the scene.
- Knox County, Tenn. — Ofr. Ben Munro detains two teens who were hiding behind a fence in a parking lot in connection with some kind of alleged disturbance at CVS. They are, however, quickly uncuffed and released. Ofr. Munro: “So apparently they had some sort of incident at CVS. The clerk didn’t want these juveniles in there, and they ran, but they haven’t committed any crime, so we’re gonna let them go tonight.”
- Toledo, Ohio (pre-recorded segment) — Cops respond to a report of an alleged burglary in progress by an adult son at his mom’s house. The subject is detained in the backyard and taken into custody only for an outstanding warrant. Ofr. Smith mentions that “Mom’s changing her story now, apparently. He has been living here for about a week. Has property inside. He is intoxicated right now and gonna get his property back.” The subject asks other LEOs on scene, including Ofr. Picking, how long before he can get out of jail and they reply “not very long. Probably just enough for you to sober up.”
- St. Lucie County, Fla. — Sheriff Pearson and other deputies searches for a misdemeanor battery domestic violence suspect. “So we’ve expanded our perimeter out. Our K9’s taking him. He was last scene at a gas station about 30 minutes ago…he left intoxicated with no shirt on. Given the weather that we have right now, it’s not the best weather for him, so hopefully we’ll find him here shortly hunkered down somewhere.”
- Monroe, La. — Ofr. Smith and HEAT attempt a traffic stop on a driver allegedly wanted in connection with a shooting. The driver bails after pulling into a car port of a random home and bumping into a parked vehicle there, prompting a foot search in a residential area. The subject is detained in the pursuit. Truck search; drugs allegedly found. Cops also find one bullet, which prompts a search in the muddy ground and on the roof of the home for a gun. Abrams: “Using a pool ladder can’t be part of the job description.”
Ofr. Jonathon Daniel recap: “…I saw him bailing out. I was right behind Serenity, and I saw him bailing out. As soon as he did, I just gave chase. We actually ended up about a block and a half over on the other side of the subdivision. He ended up bailing back on us behind a house, and popped out and was just kind of casually walking like he belonged in the neighborhood. So we ended up getting him into custody right there in the streets. And it’s definitely him. He’s covered in mud, but it’s a guy we’ve been looking for. He’s actually responsible for at least two shootings that we know of. So this is a good one for us.” Ofr. Smith adds that “He said that he had a bullet on him, so they’re gonna go and backtrack as much as possible of what [the other officer] remembers his direction of travel was and try and locate a handgun or rifle, whatever he might have had, because who just walks around with one bullet in their pocket?” Abrams: “So they continue to look for the gun that they believe he may have discarded during that search or during the runaway.”
- Berkeley County, S.C. — Cpl. Devonte Car initiates a traffic stop for defective equipment, i.e., a brake light is out. Cpl. Carr is surprised that the occupants are returning from a trip to the beach. “From the beach? It’s cold!”
- Humboldt County, Calif. — Dep. Frankie Rojas responds to the scene were a woman was attack and robbed in a supermarket parking lot in connection with trying to retrieve a stolen iPhone from suspects who fled the scene in a sedan, a suspect vehicle which which Dep. Royas may be familiar from a prior stop. Paramedics are already on scene. Dep. Rojas explains that “At this point, we’re just still trying to gather some more information. Deputy Calderone is the primary officer so she’s kind of gathering the information. The victim is primarily Spanish speaking, and I am one of three deputies in the department that speaks Spanish, so I’ll probably be a little more hands on so I can get more information, make sure that all the right questions are being asked.” Abrams: “If he knows that car, that could be a critical clue.”
Listen to a Dep. Rojas provide further details about the incident:
- Missing segment — West Hills, Calif.
- Richland County, S.C. — Sgt. Blanding conducts a traffic stop.
- Knox County, Tenn. — Ofr. Munro initiates a traffic stop on a truck pulling a trailer. “This gentleman — we stopped him. He’s all over the road, but I think he possibly just doesn’t know how to drive a trailer.” The drive is released after a license and documentation check.
- Berkeley County, S.C. — As the episode ends, Cpl. Devonte Carr makes a traffic stop on a vehicle originally spotted behind a school. The car also apparently as its brake lights out.
