This Weekend’s On Patrol: Live Highlights, Commentary, and Social Media Activity
An On Patrol: Live recap including NYC studio host/executive producer Dan Abrams’ puns, analysis, and banter with co-anchor Curtis Wilson (a Richland County, S.C., deputy sheriff), and analyst Captain Tom Rizzo (Howell Township, N.J., PD), along with the often-provocative or playful social media reaction, follows.

On Patrol: Live tonight: On this Valentine’s Day broadcast during which #OPLove is trending, Tom Rizzo has the weekend off (the first show he’s missed since he became a regular).
In Rizzo’s absence, Officer Linsay Zarick joins the studio panel this weekend. When On Patrol: Live was following Wilkes-Barre (Pa.) PD, Officer Zarick became an #OPL fan favorite for her skill in de-escalating situations. Could her appearance be a precursor for that police department returning to the show?
Captain Kory Flowers (Henderson, N.C., PD) also joins the panel for this weekend’s shows as analyst — his first #OPL appearance since October 14, 2023.
Dan Abrams: “It is Valentine’s Day. We got a guy named Flowers in the house — actual name. And our #OPLive hashtag is #OPLove!”
Excited to have Officer Linsay Zarick from the Wilkes-Barre PD in the studio this weekend, and perhaps we'll learn once and for all whether it's pronounced "Wilkes-Barre" or "Wilkes-Barre." #OnPatrolFirstShift at 8E|5P followed by #OnPatrolLive at 9E|6P. #OPLive #REELZ #OPNation pic.twitter.com/EJqjMbQyVY

- Richland County, S.C. — Master Deputy Nathan Rowley assists on a pursuit of an alleged reckless driving/no lights vehicle. Traffic stop at gunpoint. Car search. Captain Danny Brown is also among the LEOs on scene. Deputy Rowley: “He’s gonna be going to jail for at least failure to stop for blue lights right now until we figure out more.” Deputy Rowley adds that they allegedly found some “after-market packaging materials” but no weed (listen below).

- Monroe, La. — Members of the High Enforcement Apprehension Team (HEAT), including Corporal Kelsie Wilson, investigate a shots fired call in a residential area. Officer Nathanael Chapman spots a shell casing on the ground. Abrams: “They’re trying to put the pieces together here to figure out exactly what happened and where it happened.”

Officer Chapman summary: “Again, all we can do right now is kind of circulate. Maybe the guy had gotten shot, and now he’s on his way to the hospital. Maybe the suspect missed, and nobody got shot. Hopefully that’s the case, but right now, we don’t have anything, so we’re just gonna look for shell casings and maybe some witnesses.”
- Daytona Beach, Fla. — Officer Robert Mowery heads to the scene of an alleged car-vs.-pedestrian (the latter riding a motor scooter) hit and run and expresses frustration because other motorists won’t move out of the way to allow him to get to the scene promptly. “You would hope that if it was somebody’s else loved one, people would move out of the way, right? It it was their loved one, they would hope people would move out of the way. It’s ridiculous.” On scene, he makes contact with the victim and a witness to obtain descriptions of the car and the alleged driver respectively. Paramedics summoned to the scene.
Officer Zarick seems to share the Daytona cop’s frustration: “It’s already an intense situation trying to get somewhere to help somebody in need, and we don’t just put our lights and sirens on for no reason. Obviously, we need to get somewhere in a hurry. Civilians should know it.” Deputy Curtis Wilson: “….so many times that it happens, and no matter how many times you preach it, you still run across somebody who doesn’t.” Captain Captain Kory Flowers: “People are so distracted now: texting and paying attention to everything but the roadway. And you’ve got this Christmas tree in your rear view, and you don’t even see it. It’s kind of hard to believe.”
It really amazing Julie how much this really happens. It really is frustrating when people will not get out of the way of Emergency vehicles. Officer said it best, what if it were their family member…#OPNation #OPLive

Officer Mowery incident summary: “He doesn’t seem to have any serious injuries; they’re gonna do a medical check on him right now. So, he’s gonna get a check right now; just a vitals check. After that, make sure he’s okay. We’re gonna try to get some suspect vehicle information to see if we got cameras in the area to see potentially where this vehicle has gone, if we can identify anybody.”

- Clayton County, Ga. — Deputy Rob Fleming and other units conduct a traffic stop on a car that allegedly ran a stop sign. Under questioning, the driver insists that other than a small amount of weed, “ain’t nothing in there…I don’t have nothing…I’m trying to get to my girl…”The stop ultimately ends amicably; the driver is released after pouring out the weed. Abrams: “The man’s a hopeless romantic. He just wants to get to his woman. He’s got the flowers in the car, and ‘you guys are stopping me. C’mon…the man has flowers, yes…let him go if all you find is a little marijuana…”

Abrams: “I’m gonna ask a guy named Flowers, right? Kory Flowers, on Valentine’s Day, give us the ‘floral assessment.'” Captain Flowers: “Well, people always ask ‘how do I get out of getting pulled over.’ And the honest truth is be honest. They pulled this fellow over. He said ‘I ran a stop sign, and I got flowers, and I’m trying to deliver.’ I’m pulling for that guy.” Abrams jokes that “the first thing she’s gonna say when he gets there is ‘where’s the weed’? I thought we were gonna have a good Valentine’s Day. What are you talking about — you don’t have any weed?’ But as a practical matter, even in places where you’re not gonna enforce it, if there’s something like this where it’s just a little bit, you got to get them to pour it out.” Zarick: “I’m sure they’ll find other ways to make Valentine’s Day enjoyable. Fortunately, we do have the discretion to charge or not to charge. but they’re still not gonna walk away with it.” Abrams: “Right. You can’t let them walk away.” Flowers: “And they made a good connection with that guy. I could watch those four guys talk to each other.” Abrams: “A good guy. He’s really turned his life around. It was inspirational to listen to.”
Kudos to him for turning his life around.

Captain Flowers asserts that getting pepper sprayed “is worse than getting tased. It makes you panic because you can’t — everybody reacts slightly differently but my eyes just shut. I got pepper-maced in a kind of a riot once when I was a bike cop, and I just was reaching, and I felt a duty belt, and I said, ‘pal, hang on. Take care of me; I can’t see. Take me to safety.’ And when you can’t see, it makes you panic.” Officer Zarick: “And not only the immediate impact, and then it lingers for days even when you’re showering. It does get back in your eyes. It’s terrible; I’d rather get a tased 100 times over.”

- Las Vegas, Nev. — Officer German Irra initiates a traffic stop for an alleged expired tag. The registration paperwork apparently is apparently for a different car. The driver allegedly has warrants.
On Patrol: Live Hour 2
- Daytona Beach, Fla. (pre-recorded segment) — Sergeant Chris Maher and other units respond to a burglary in progress. Cops detain a suspect after a foot chase. “I watched you — you’re going to prison.” Listen to Sergeant Maher’s recap followed by studio panel commentary during which Captain Flowers explains explains that “you can win or lose a chase psychologically in the first 200 yards.”
- Clayton County, Ga. — Deputy Fleming along with Deputy Ray Everett and Lieutenant Jonathan Carey conduct a traffic stop on the driver. Deputy Fleming asks the man whether he’s “ever been down the road,” which is apparently slang for if someone has ever being jailed. The driver allegedly informs police that there is a gun in the car. Vehicle search. The driver is ultimately released with no charges.
- Knox County, Tenn. — Officer Yule-Zaagman provides backup on a traffic stop for alleged speeding. One of the occupants with no ID claims he doesn’t have his Social Security number memorized. She chats with the occupants about, among other things, playing pickleball.

- Daytona Beach, Fla. — Detective Noah Galbreath provides backup on a traffic stop. Heavy bleeping. “This gentleman didn’t want to get out of the car when they gave him some lawful orders. So he has escorted out, placed under arrest for resisting. There’s a handgun in the driver’s door. Looks like there’s some shake or weed scattered throughout the car. So we’re gonna check on his medical marijuana license to see if that’s valid or not, retrieve the firearm, and we’ll go from there.” The detective subsequently asserts that cops allegedly spotted “a clear bag in, I think, the passenger floorboard area. Had some white powder residue on it, so we’re gonna test that along with some of the other possible THC oil, some of this weed as well. Medical marijuana license is not valid, so once we test that, we’ll see if there’s probable cause to search the vehicle. Otherwise, it will be inventoried most likely…the bag…field-tested presumptive for meth amphetamine, so we additionally have probable cause. Probably the reason why the guy’s being such an unhappy person.”
- Clayton County, Ga. — Deputy Fleming and colleagues pursue and make a traffic stop at gunpoint on a truck which allegedly had fled once before from another county. On Patrol: Live caption: “Felony stop.” Four occupants. Odor of weed allegedly emanating from the vehicle; probable cause search. An occupant allegedly has a warrant.
- Hazen, Ark. — Chief Bradley Taylor provides backup on a traffic stop which is not on the highway for a change. The very cooperative/respectful motorist indicates that he is transporting two dogs from Los Angeles to Savannah for their owners and produces the relevant paperwork for same. Car search. The motorist explains that because he has a new babysitter watching his own dog at home, his safe containing items such as about $10,000 in cash and an ounce of gold is in the car. K9 Bosco separately alerts on a box (“I have not clue what is in that box, sir”). No contraband is found in the box. The driver is released to continue his journey. Abrams: “It’s all kind of a bizarre story, right? It’s kind of weird, but it [may] all end up making kind of weird sense…dogs named Rooney and Peanut Butter. Those are great names for dogs. it’s just when you throw in the $10,000 in cash and gold coins, it’s like ‘whoa — I wasn’t expecting that…'”
Listen to Chief Taylor’s recap (“…we’re out here running that criminal interdiction and sometimes it’s funny stories you deal with, but sometimes they make sense”)after which Abrams asserts that “But this is a particularly odd one. All the indicators were that there was something going on here…unbelievable…guy’s gonna be going on his way. Seems he is just a guy transporting dogs who brought his safe with him because he didn’t want to leave it at home and had a box in his car that actually did belong to somebody else.”

- Richland County, S.C. — Master Deputy Collins Harper initiates a friendly traffic stop. “I pulled you over for multiple reasons.”
- Daytona Beach, Fla. — Officer Mowery makes contact with a pedestrian on a well-being check after the man apparently fell over the curb. On Patrol: Live caption: “Curb check.” Officer Mowery synopsis: “So he’s obviously down here for the races. He’s on the way to the bus terminal up here, so he doesn’t need any medical attention. He didn’t have any bumps or bruises. He’s just a little inebriated, but he’s good.” Abrams: “This is Daytona Beach, and it is the weekend of the Daytona 500. Not sure if that guy’s attending…a little pregame, just saying…it could start over. Friday night…”

- Missing segment — Beaver Dam, Wisc.
- Richland County, S.C. — Deputy Harper and other units respond to a report of a fight in progress at a shopping mall.
- Daytona Beach, Fla. — Detective Galbreath makes a traffic stop at gunpoint on a slow-rolling car. “Your tint is super dark, bro.” The driver seems unwilling to step out of the car as directed by the detective. “You’re under arrest, bro.” Driver: “I ain’t doing nothing wrong, bro.” The car allegedly smells of weed. A bag of weed is allegedly found. The driver is taken into custody.

Detective Galbreath recap: “I stopped this vehicle for a suspected tint violation. As I conducted the stop here in the roadway, he just slowly started backing into this driveway and continued just backing in slowly, slowly, slowly. And as I walked up to him, told him to stop…as I attempted to stop him, he started reaching hard to the right side towards his glove box, either grabbing something or putting something in there. And so I drew my firearm, asked him what he put in there. He opened it up. It was his handgun that he put inside. Started reaching for his handgun again. I told him not to. Went around the other side, gave him numerous orders, lawful orders, to get out of the vehicle. He refused every order to get out of the vehicle. He was arrested right there for resisting. Pulled out of the car, placed under arrest. I’m gonna check the tint as well. He’s got pounds of weed in his car. He’s got weed in his pants…”

Officer Mowery adds that “So they’re going through the car right now. They got narcotics — a large sum of narcotics. They also got a gun as well. So they’re gonna continue to search the vehicle. He’s not very cooperative, as you can see. He’s given us some type of issue, no matter what we do with him. We’re trying to be as lax as we can with him, but he’s complaining about everything. - Clayton County, Ga. — Deputy Fleming and other units track a vehicle that allegedly fled from them previously. Traffic stop initiated, but the vehicle flees on the highway. After a pursuit that involves two PITs, police make a traffic stop at gunpoint. As an aside, Deputy Fleming mentions that as a general principle, it is a big mistake to flee from police. “As soon as we catch you, you’re going to prison.”
Dep. Everett explains that “Lieutenant Carey went to conduct a traffic stop on this vehicle. The vehicle fled…we conducted a PIT on the vehicle. It continued rolling…we ended up coming across the median and blocking them off. And we got a successful PIT and a good pursuit. So they’re going, well, the driver’s going down to the Clayton County Jail.” Abrams: “All right, so they got him. But a number of people inside that vehicle, Captain Flowers, that doesn’t mean they’re all getting arrested.” Flowers: “No, it’s chaotic. They have to get everybody detained quickly, and then now they can slow down and determine, like, who’s responsible for what. But that’s a chaotic few moments for sure.” Abrams: “And these PIT maneuvers, difficult to do, but they were able to find an opportunity to do it at the right time in the right place.” Deputy Wilson: “Absolutely. And then, of course, you’ve got the Georgia State Patrol involved because the PIT, the first one they did, also involved another civilian vehicle. So that one has to be taken care of as they handle the rest of the incident that took place.”
Lieutenant Carey adds that “I tried to stop this car for impeding traffic on the interstate. So he pulls over and walk up to the window, or get out the car and walk up to, and he takes off, so, of course, we’re gonna chase him. Whoever runs we chase, so chase him. I tried to PIT him, or [another deputy] tried to PIT him. Traffic came up; once the traffic got clear, I went on ahead and initiated the PIT. He hit a, I think he hit the wall, he crashed into another car, but he kept going. So he got off the interstate right here, made a U-turn, and I found the opportunity to PIT him again, went on ahead and PIT him. Getting him in custody, and now we’re gonna find out why he’s running. Everybody runs for a reason, so we’re gonna find out what’s going on.” Deputy Fleming asserts that “in Clayton County, you don’t run from us. We will chase you, and we will PIT you.” Abrams: “Different departments have different PIT policies. You just heard the Clayton County PIT policy laid out there: ‘Run from us, we chase. We’re gonna get you.'” Upon a records check, police determine that the driver is allegedly a convicted felon.
“In Clayton County, you don’t run from us. We will chase you, and we will PIT you.”

- Monroe, La. — Officers Chapman and Trey Goins make a traffic stop. Officer Goins ask some bystanders in another car to move on and wishes them a happy Valentine’s Day. Officer Goins recap: “…traffic stop on the vehicle…also approached this vehicle. The child was unrestrained. Let them go with a warning — very cooperative, very nice. So happy Valentine’s Day, and let them go with a warning, so we’ll be on to the next.” Abrams: “Just a reminder: be nice, be polite, you can go home with a warning on Valentine’s Day in particular.”
- Las Vegas, Nev. — Officer Matt Nardone makes a traffic stop on a truck for mismatched plates. Driver: “I bought it that way.” Officer Nardone ultimately seizes the plate, issues a ticket, and releases the driver to bring chocolate to wish wife or girlfriend as planned. Abrams: “Sometimes life can be a box of chocolate on this Valentine’s Day.”
- Richland County, S.C. — Deputy Harper makes a traffic stop for “a bunch of moving violations.” He adds that “that’s some dark windows.”
