Other than On Patrol: Live, is there any interesting content on the NBCUniversal Peacock direct-to-consumer streaming service? In scrolling through the offerings, one possibility might be Knock at the Cabin, the new film directed and co-written by M. Night Shyamalan.
Shyamalan is, of course, the director of The Sixth Sense, a superb film with a huge twist. In addition to a number of other celluloid successes, has also helmed various duds.
Where does Knock at the Cabin, which was originally released theatrically about two months ago by Universal Pictures (which is owned by Peacock’s parent company Comcast), fit in that oeuvre?
There are a few, brief scary sequences in the apocalyptic storyline, but overall it would be a challenge to describe Knock at the Cabin as a horror film.
Here’s the knock on Knock at the Cabin:
Afterr Shyamalan establishes the initial premise, the audience has to sit there and watch as the storyline plods along to see how the vacationing couple (played by Jonathan Groff and Ben Aldridge, who in the film are co-parenting Wen, portrayed by Kristen Cui) can resolve their dilemma.
That is, assuming they are aren’t being hoaxed by a group of doomsday-cult intruders.
And in the end, as one IMDB user appropriately observed, “you are left with a sense of ‘was that really it?’, and ‘was there a point to the 100 minutes of this nonsense?'”
Much of the acting seems amateurish, with the exception of former WWE wrestler Dave Bautista, the leader of a quartet of the above-referenced weirdos who may or may not be who they claim.
Bautista is having a heck of a career in the movies. Unlike a lot of crossover (or would-be crossover) stars from the sports-entertainment world, Bautista actually has range, including roles in the Knives Out sequel and Army of the Dead (both on Netflix) as well as in the Marvel franchise.
If you watch closely, Shyamalan appears in a cameo on the TV in the background of the cabin, in which he can be seen hawking an air fryer on a home-shopping channel.
Knock at the Cabin.
