Golden State Warriors long-range shooter Stephen Curry reportedly wants to put some distance between his estate in an exclusive San Francisco-area enclave and any nearby low-income housing.
From the New York Post:
Famed NBA marksman Stephen Curry appears more comfortable with 3-point daggers than 3-story developments. Along with his influencer wife Ayesha, Curry has objected to the establishment of multi-family housing on a property next to his sprawling California mansion…
In an email to Atherton, Cal., officials, who are due to vote on the proposal on Tuesday, the National Basketball Association superstar and his spouse reportedly wrote, in part, that “We hesitate to add to the ‘not in our backyard’ (literally) rhetoric, but we wanted to send a note before today’s meeting. Safety and privacy for us and our kids continues to be our top priority and one of the biggest reasons we chose Atherton as home.”
Limousine liberals (known as champagne socialists in the U.K.) consist of those signalers of virtue who seek to use their wealth and connections to insulate themselves from policies imposed on everyone else.
The Atherton-Curry NIMBY scenario seems to be a yet another example.
From the Washington Free Beacon:
“While the Golden State Warriors guard opposes affordable housing in his own neighborhood, Curry in 2021 joined the nonprofit NinetyToZero, which aims to promote economic equality and opportunity. Bridging the racial wealth gap is one of the biggest challenges of our generation,” Curry said at the time. “Uncovering solutions and creating opportunities is something I’m profoundly committed to.”
Atherton, home to many one percenters, Atherton is said to be the most expensive zip code in America.
Many of its upscale residents in addition to the Currys have objected to the proposed housing project which apparently contemplates the construction of nearly 350 new homes in the town.
“Atherton, just like all other cities in the area, is wrestling with its Housing Element, a document submitted to the state’s housing department that estimates where new housing developments will go and proposes policies to promote more housing, especially low-income housing,” the Daily Post of Palo Alto explained.
Outkick highlighted the irony, if not the hypocrisy, of the Democrat-supporting couple:
[T]this entire situation sounds like nothing but a headline-grabber involving a liberal California town council wanting others to know they have affordable housing in mind, and that they’ve made an effort, but nothing will actually come of it…As for the Currys, their opposition to affordable housing near their $30 million mansion…[is] even richer when you think back to the family publicly endorsing Joe Biden for President in 2020 and Ayesha publicly talking about the “racial inequality” and “social injustices” in our country.
Those “social injustices” just can’t be resolved too close to her backyard in the form of a housing development.
