Democrats and their allied, litigious “civil rights” groups probably think that the application of voter ID laws are is worse than waterboarding. Aimed at voter fraud, these laws merely require someone to show a government-issued photo identification (or an alternative form of identification) to vote. If a stoner can come up with a proper ID to gain legal access to weed, any American citizen should be able to obtain same from the DMV. It also seems like a disrespectful form of paternalism or victimhood projection to argue that a certain constituency is incapable of getting an ID. Moreover, Dems whine about voter suppression, which is simply a way to take even minimal level steps to prevent them from stuffing the ballot box with illegal votes. Yet, a new academic study concludes that “strict” voter ID laws have no statistically significant effect at the polling place.

“We find the laws have no negative effect on registration or turnout, overall or for any group defined by race, gender, age, or party affiliation,” the study concludes in a paper published by the National Bureau of Economic Research.

The authors, Harvard and Unviersity of Bologna economic professors, also maintain that “ID requirements have no effect on fraud either,” which seems like a gross underestimation.

They gathered stats from an organization called Catalist, which provides data “to progressive organizations.”

From the Washington Free Beacon:

“The data from Catalist contained both demographic information—age, sex, race, and party affiliation—as well as information on whether or not a surveyed person was actually registered. This means that the paper’s authors could test whether or not voter ID not only stopped registered voters from voting, but discouraged unregistered voters from registering.”

As far as the voter fraud conclusion, “This finding is naturally limited by the extremely small number of voter fraud cases actually identified:
fewer than one per million people per year,” the Beacon added.

Thought experiment: If voter fraud is so rare as many progressives insist, why would they oppose voter ID? Moreover, leftist politicians who have granted driver’s license to illegal aliens do so as a further attempt to game the system; it has nothing to do with maker the roads safer.

More from the Beacon about America’s primitive voting procedures:

In total, 10 states, ranging from Georgia to Wisconsin, require voters to show ID in order to vote. Seven of those states require a photo ID, and three do not. An additional 25 states ‘request’ that voters display ID, but may still permit them to vote on a provision ballot if they cannot. The remaining states ‘use other methods to verify the identity of voters,’ according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.”

While California has essentially legalized voter fraud, even Mexico requires a photo ID to vote.
